How to Fix 'No Transcript Available' on YouTube

Sometimes when you try to extract a YouTube transcript, you get an error message like "No transcript available for this video". Let's explore why this happens and how you can resolve it.

Why Do Captions Fail to Load?

Transcript extractors rely on YouTube's backend subtitle tracks. Captions are missing or fail to load for three primary reasons:

  • Creator Disabled Captions: The creator explicitly turned off automatic caption generation or deleted the subtitle track.
  • Private or Unlisted Video: Private videos block API requests for security. TranscriptGrab only extracts transcripts for public or unlisted videos.
  • Processing Delay: If a video was uploaded very recently, YouTube's auto-generated subtitle engine may still be processing the audio.

How to Solve It

If you encounter this issue, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Verify on YouTube that the video actually plays and has a "CC" button in the control bar. If the "CC" button is grayed out or missing, captions are disabled.
  2. If the video is private, request the creator to change the visibility to "Unlisted". Unlisted videos can be transcribed.
  3. Wait 10-30 minutes for new uploads so YouTube's automated transcription speech-to-text algorithm finishes processing.
